Through words we can raise confident children with the power to dream, create, break boundaries and explore the world.

The Mzansi Spelling Bee is a Non Profit initiative by young South Africans to contribute to the development of South Africa through education, one word at a time, one child at a time. The Mzansi Spelling Bee is an English spelling competition for children ages 9 -14 or in grades 4-8 in private, public and home schools. Children from across the South African rainbow spectrum put the Mzansi Spelling bee shirts, take to the stage to spell and emerge as spellers – a unique and special kind of kid. Children challenge themselves stand as equals struggling over vowels and consonants.

The word Bee was used to describe those moments when people would come together for a common purpose and work. Communities would have bees for harvest time, quilting, house building. This year hundreds of people across South Africa have joined forces with us in encouraging children to spell and have faith in their abilities. literacy rates in South Africa at a low – the spelling bee is an inspiration, a show of what is yet possible for South Africa.
At the heart of the spelling bee is a desire to help South African children learn to enjoy reading and the possibility that words have to offer.

This will need every single one of us to help them, encourage them and offer the loudest cheer in saying we believe in them. The Mzansi Spelling Bee is an incredible opportunity for parents and the society to get involved in a fun activity for the whole family. This is a community event where spellers increase their vocabulary, gain greater knowledge of the English language, improve their public speaking skills and make lifelong friends.

It has been a year in the making and now all of Gauteng, Limpopo and Kwazulu Natal helping us stage this unique event that will unite South Africa around the love of words. Come with your children and help us cheer the best spellers as they struggle with words – to be the last spellers standing.
