Xolani Gwala the Dragon tamer

Xolani Gwala is an experienced and multifaceted journalist with over 15 years of experience in both radio and television and he brings this experience as host to the first ever Dragons’ Den South Africa.

Having started his working career as a supermarket shelf packer, this hard working go-getter has achieved much in a short space of time. He holds a national diploma in Public Relations Management from the Natal University of Technology. It was here, on the university’s campus radio station that Xolani had his first brush with media whilst studying for his diploma.

Gwala was born in KwaZulu-Natal where he started his radio career as a newsreader for Ukhozi FM and P4 Radio in Durban. From there he moved up to Johannesburg to become a reporter for Talk Radio 702.

In 2000 he made the leap into television when he joined SABC Africa as a newsreader, senior reporter and a talk show host. He has been the Zulu Newsreader for SABC 1 and the host on SABC 3’s, “News Hour”, becoming the first newsreader to present the news in two different languages across two different TV channels.

In 2008, after a hiatus in the Middle East, he returned to South Africa and rejoined the SABC as a host for SAFM’s, afternoon drive show whilst hosting the SABC 1 show “Asikhulume”. In 2013, Gwala returned to Talk Radio 702 as their afternoon drive show host.

Xolani brings his work ethic, passion and journalistic experience to Dragons’ Den, he also brings a sense of empathy and his well-known smile will light up the show.
