All eyes were on Durban this Sunday, when the Idols SA season 11 audition bus rolled into this beautiful coastal city.
Why wouldn’t all eyes be on Durban considering how the last two South African Idols were discovered on these very shores? Kicking things off was Amanda, a season 9 alumnus from Port Elizabeth who made it to Sun City, but bowed out during Theatre Week. Would things work out the second time around? It would seem so. After wowing the Judges with her sweet voice and a brand new attitude, Amanda earned herself a Golden Ticket and is all set to take another shot at snagging the Idols SA crown. Could this be her year?
16-year-old Gali-lee was next in the audition room. Despite impressing with her pretty face and stunning style, the Judges felt Gali just wasn’t ready for Hell Week. After Gali’s “no”, it was all downhill from there. Nervous Neliswa couldn’t even sit comfortably in the Ford Hot Seat before her turn infront of the Judges came. After pacing about for an eternity, it was finally showtime. As soon as the songstress laid eyes on Unathi, Somizi, Randall and Gareth, it was all over. Her Lira number failed to hit the mark and pretty soon, it was “Hello tears and disappointment”!
Khulekani’s attempt at lifting everyone’s spirits with his ode to Valentines Day bombed dismally and had Randall cursing like the proverbial sailor. “**** Yho, that was bad” was the only comment the bespectacled Judge could utter, leaving Khulekani in need of a big hug. Ever-helpful Somizi then took the floor and showed Khulekani where he had gone wrong.
Sibusiso’s cover of The Fugees’ “Killing Me Softly” also failed to impress. Luckily, if Gareth is to be believed, the crooner has a bright future in public transportation. After seeing his moves Gareth told the Durbanite “I want you to drive every bus I get on”.
After hundreds of auditions failed to hit the mark, Winston finally walked into the audition room. Before he could even sing, Gareth made the Idols alum drop down to his knees and apologise for badmouthing production after failing to make it to the Idols finale during his previous stints on the show. “I was upset and I was bitter,” he said. After apologising profusely, Winston blew the Judges away with his vocals and earned his ticket to Sun City.
Mzilikazi and Zakhele’s original compositions failed to move the Judges, who sent them both packing. However, everything changed when Bridgitt walked into the room. The gorgeous lass won over Gareth, Unathi, Somizi and Randall with her original composition and got four “yeses”.
Charl aka “Waterboy” also made an appearance in Durban (surprise, surprise) and got to celebrate his birthday in style. What did our Judges gift him with? His very own five litre container of delicious water. Does Charl need Idols rehab? It would seem so! After Charl’s final goodbye, Mlondi, Hayden, Lihle, Sizwe and 12 others pulled off stunning performances that are taking them to Sun City.
