The latest silver screening, hosted by M-Net Movies Family and Ster-Kinekor, took many viewers back to their childhood. Revisiting the story of the beloved bee Maya in her own feature film, the busy little insect sent older audience members tripping down memory lane, while introducing the character to a new generation.

The occasion was made even more momentous by the movie’s availability in three languages – English, Afrikaans and Zulu – giving viewers the choice to watch it in their mother tongue. KykNET and Mzansi Magic were also on board to enjoy the multilingual moment.

A heartwarming tale for children centred on an inspirational character meant Maya the Bee needed the right audience. Although the older crowd were just as delighted to attend, M-Net Movies wanted to make sure primarily children enjoyed the moment, specifically those who would not necessarily have the opportunity to enter such a competition or even regularly go to the cinema.

Children’s homes were invited to the screening at The Zone in Rosebank. Watching Maya’s adventures unfold on the big screen were children from NewClare Centre, Thusong Centre, Abrahim Kriel Residential Centre and Abrahim Kriel Community Centre.

Victims of trauma, abuse, neglect and poverty, the homes take them in to provide shelter, care and rehabilitation. Outings such as their trip to the screening are a real treat, and judging by their enthusiasm and bright faces, Maya has found several new fans. Take a look at images snapped at the screening below.
