Last night, all eyes were on our Idols SA season 11 Top 10, as they kicked off the first in our exciting series of Top 10 live performances, on the big State Theatre stage. As expected, our talent stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park, with stunning performances that left us yearning for more.
The show kicked off in stunning fashion, with Elwira’s rousing rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Without You”. Gareth was first to say what everyone was thinking. “That was a good performance. But you didn’t smile”. Karabo, on the other hand, managed to effortlessly tick all the right boxes. “Karabo, you are on a roll. You have so much soul. You have been possessed by Tsepho Tsola’s spirit,” Somizi enthused, while a thoroughly impressed Unathi told him “I couldn’t take my eyes off you. That was effortless”. Randall was as equally floored. “You have this incredible sense of comfort on that stage. It’s amazing how easy you make it seem,” he said.
Amanda put on quite the show too when her turn came and Gareth was quick to heap on the praise. “That’s what I wanted to hear. Notice me, I’m here, I’m a great singer. You did that”. Somizi seemed to agree fully with Gareth’s assertion. “This is the Amanda I want to see on that stage at all times”.
Siphelele’s take on Lira’s “Soul In Mind” was well received too. However, the judges had a lot of advice to share with the KZN native. “Your phrasing wasn’t great, but you have a great voice,” Randall told him. When Dineo had slayed them all with her rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”, Gareth advised the little firecracker to watch her energy levels. “The first half was bad, but the second was great”. Somizi and Unathi were thoroughly impressed and even threw in Beyoncé’s ‘Sasha Fierce’ alter ego into the mix. Randall preferred to go the short and sweet route. “My work here is done,” he said, promptly sending the audience into a screaming frenzy.
Rhema’s performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the mirror” went down a treat too. Unathi exclaimed how amazing it was to see the band and the background vocalists living the moment and loving it. “That’s what a true performer is supposed to do. Even your band was smiling, ” she said. Randall told Rhema how worried he had been prior to his performance. “Sometimes performances are overwrought, but by holding back, you had a beautiful performance. Well done,” he told the vocalist.
Although nervous, Lungisa gave a convincing performance, that left the judges singing his praises. “I didn’t expect such a beautiful performance. You are versatile too,” Gareth said, while Unathi told Lungisa “Thanks for believing in yourself. Your vocal range is magnificent”. Nadia had mixed reviews from our judges, however, Gareth loved it and said as much. “I am pleased. Rihanna’s Take a Bow is one of my favourite songs and you did well. I don’t have one mean thing to say,” he told our “Poppie”.
Loyiso was so much of a hit Somizi put in a request. “Wow, wow, wow! Your confidence and power is incredible, Loyiso. Do me a favour and check your ID. You are 32, not 16”. Unathi seemed to be taken by Loyiso’s smile, while Randall told our youngest contender “Many forget this is a competition, but you always keep that top of mind”.
Mmatema then wrapped things up with her rendition of Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High”. Gareth got gooies and was “transported back to the 60s” while Unathi told her “you are untouchable. Do not be apologetic about your gift”. Randall summed it up with “It ain’t over ‘til Mmatema sings”.
