In the beginning of Kofifi, when, after witnessing her sing onstage and enchant the crowd with the sweetest voice behind her dewy beauty, Themba just had to know her name, and hopefully more. Her name was Stella and she was Sophiatown’s most promising songstress at the time. Loved by many for her style and grace.
Stella and Themba had no idea of the kind of road their love would lead them down. From their first kiss stolen outside her mom’s kitchen door, to his first mistake, when he published an article about her without her mission. It was one test after the other.
The one that got away
When he had to fight Styles for her affections, after too many blunders, she lost faith in him and ran into the sunset with Styles. Their love was troubled ever since and with Styles in the picture, Themba was completely alienated from Stella.
Until recently. The news of the unfair Kofifi removals by the apartheid government had everyone up in arms. It also brought the community together. The power struggle was now political, as Sophiatown came under threat of an unjust system. With Themba at the forefront as an activist, Stella was also moved to join in as the township fought for justice.
They shared the same convictions in a space that rekindled their old feelings for one another. But more heartache lay ahead when Stella fell pregnant and the baby belonged to Styles.
That might have been the end of their romance but the love never died. Bab’Themba went on and carried Stella in his heart just as it appears Stella, who turns out to be Zoe’s psychiatric grandmother, did.
Reunited, and it feels so good!
Gogo didn’t remember a lot of things but her memory served her well. She was the very Stella that everyone was searching for. She was Bab’Themba’s Stella from back in the days of Kofifi. If only people could believe her. But people were always quick to write off an old lady as crazy. Even a once romantic Liyana, warned the old man to forget about the idea of ever finding Stella.
But old man Tikkie is convinced that the old gal is out there somewhere. Will Gogo’s memory fair or fail?
