Crazy fun all round!

The first segment of the brand new Give Me That Bill Mzansi game show was nothing short of fun and hilarious! People have the craziest of stories attached to their varying debts and who’s to say which is more serious than the other?

Siyabonga Ngwekazi and Kenneth Nkosi were not about to give abadlali an easy ride to the clearing of their debts. The games played were challenging and Stanley can attest to this as he struggled to get a spoon in a cup in the warm up round.
Kodwa ke it was all fun and games as contestants shared their stories and played for their debts to be settled.

In the qualifying round, Kobela, with a R5,489 school fees bill, had the biggest debt. She had half of her bill paid off in “Raise the flag” and also won a spot in the semi-final round.

Speaking of crazy stories, Gudani had a R2,500 bill which he accumulated from a loan he took from umashonisa (loan shark). He took out the loan to pay back his mother’s money which he had gambled, and also in order to return with the groceries he had been sent to buy. Luckily for him, he had half of his bill settled in the qualifying round and the rest of it paid off when he won the final round!

Wouldn’t you agree that it was indeed an exciting game show? Which bill did you think had the funniest story to it?

Vinny’s House: Break the internet, DJ Nana

Broken beat, jazzy, loungy – whatever you choose to call it, DJ Nana’s Vinny’s House set this Saturday 3 January 2015, was certainly one for the books.

Following in the footsteps of the incredibly talented Andy Compton, who rocked Mzansi Magic Music last weekend, DJ Nana took over the mixer soon after DJ Vinny Da Vinci’s inspired one-hour set on 3 January 2015 and proved why he is one of the hottest names in house today.

After launching broken, dance floor missiles, social media lit up just like it should, resulting in our favourite mixologists almost breaking the internet. That’s exactly how you welcome 2015!

How about a little love for house master Vinny Da Vinci who killed his incredible set? You bet!

Tune in to Vinny’s House every Saturday from 19:00 to 21:00, on Mzansi Magic Music, DStv channel 321.

Our Perfect Wedding: Dealing with the in-laws

In the premiere episode of Our Perfect Wedding Season 4, we saw how pressure from one’s family can affect your relationship. Melusi’s very traditional family put pressure on Puseletso, who holds strong religious views, to bare children before getting married.

The couple was able to compromise and reach an agreement that made all parties happy.

Dealing with the in-laws isn’t always easy, so here are a few tips to help you out:
• Good fences make good neighbours. It is good to set up boundaries to ensure that they do not interfere too much.
• Always be open about what bothers you. Communication is key for all relationships in one’s life.
• If your spouse if having issues with the in-laws, step in and mediate as soon as possible.
• Do not run to your parents to solve your marital issues. This will only alienate your partner and cause more rifts between them and your family.
• Make time for your relationship away from your families. Your primary concern after marriage is building your new family, take time to nurture it.

Bootcamp Mzansi: The Worst Diets in History

$

You, with the carrot, lemon and salt water. Yes you! Did you know that you could actually be doing your body more harm than good every moment you ditch a balanced meal for water and air, or yet another jug of rancid, cleanse juice? Apart from failing to producing long-term weight loss results, some diets can be harmful to your health. Here’s a list of the 10 worst diets in history, according to Likes.com

The Air Diet (Yup. No typo)
Also known as “L’Air Fooding” this French fad diet was popularised by a Dolce & Gabbana campaign. It showed Madonna and a few other celebrities holding up delicious foods to their mouths but not eating them. The concept of this diet is that you cook the food, put it on the plate, serve a setting like you were actually going to eat it and then rather than consume it, you hold it up to your mouth but do not take a bite. It is supposed to fool your body into thinking you’ve eaten.

The Cigarette Diet
Nicotine is a stimulant so smoking instead of eating can trigger your brain to feel satisfied. They are also said to suppress appetite in some people. In theory, the dieter smokes a cigarette instead of eating a meal. This is said to result in weight loss but we all know that smoking can cause a myriad of illness including asthma, heart attacks and cancer! This diet is not only bad, it’s deadly.

The Tapeworm Diet
This diet fad was popular in the early 1900’s when people would sell tapeworms for weight loss. As medicine advanced the world learned that this parasite can cause malnutrition, diarrhea, anaemia, the formation of fluid-filled cysts that damage organs and vomiting. In 2009, talk show host Tyra Banks interviewed women who said they would willingly ingest a tapeworm for weight loss, even though it could result in serious damage to organs, blocked circulation, seizures or even death. Since then, this diet has picked up some fame again despite the clear warnings.

Sleeping Beauty Diet
With the Sleeping Beauty diet, dieters sleep off the extra pounds. Granted, sleep can slow down metabolism and result in major weight gain, but this particular diet calls for heavy sedation and days of sleep. The dieters have to take sleeping pills or other medications to sedate them. Yikes!

HCG Diet
According to the diet plan, you are only supposed to consume 500 calories a day and the rest is supposed to be made up for by taking the hCG hormone which is supposed to suppress appetite. Experts say that the results are that of starvation and not a balanced metabolism. The risks far outweigh the “benefits” with this one.

The Grapefruit Diet
The world has been hearing about this diet so long it almost seems normal. However, it is far from normal or healthy. In this low-calorie diet, the average caloric intake is between 800-1,000 calories per day! The experts have said that this diet will likely result in a slower metabolism down the road and there is no evidence that says grapefruit will give more health benefits than a well-balanced diet.

Baby Food Diet
When celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson created this diet, she probably had no idea it would become so popular. This diet, created by celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of eating regular foods, you replace your meals with 14 jars of baby food spread throughout the day. The major problem with this diet is that adults have different dietary needs than babies. By following this plan to lose weight you run the risk of a serious nutrient deficiency.

Cabbage Soup Diet
We’ve all heard about this one. This is supposed to be some miracle diet where you consume cabbage soup every day as a main meal. Along with it, you are able to eat bananas, some meat or skim milk depending on the day. According to director of university nutrition at Washington University, Connie Diekman, “It is a monotonous, short-term fix, severely lacking in nutrients, which will result in a weight loss that is primarily water and not the essential fat loss that is so important to improving health.” Torture and no real fat loss or health benefits.

The Cotton Ball Diet
This one is as alarming as the Air Diet. Instead of eating a regular meal, dieters eat cotton balls before a mealtime. This is supposed to fill their stomachs so they will only eat a few bites of food and stay skinny. In some extreme cases, dieters don’t eat anything at all and opt to dip the cotton balls in orange juice or something high in sugars for the energy. The risks of this diet are astounding as it will lead to malnutrition, fainting spells, damaged organs and a variety of risks that could prove fatal.

The Master Cleanse/Lemonade Diet
This diet has been around for decades, and there are a ton of variations. Pretty much all involve subsisting for days on only lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper mixed in water. “You are essentially just drinking diuretics,” Ochner says. “You’ll shed mostly water weight.” Once you start eating solid foods again, you will gain all the weight back. Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, dizziness and dehydration. Plus, on an extremely low-calorie diet like this one, you are going to lose muscle, exactly the kind of weight you don’t want to lose, Caspero says.

When Andile Snoek went to Mabali household, he had no idea that he would walk away with a lot more than the car that was on sale. He first saw Vuyelwa when he went to buy her mother’s car. “When you meet a woman for the first time and your heart skips a beat, it means she’s the one for you,” he says.

He called the landline and asked her out for dinner and they have been in love ever since. With four kids between them, Vuyelwa looks forward to an even bigger family with her new husband. In their down time, you’ll find this couple at the beach or out a park with their children.

Vuyelwa’s nine-year-old son is so excited about the wedding that he invited all his classmates to the big day. Andile’s eldest son is also looking forward to seeing his father tie the knot.

The saying ‘opposites attract’ has never been truer than in this case. Vuyelwa is a self-confessed party animal while Andile is a quiet church-goer but the two have made their relationship work.
Vuyelwa says she chose Andile because “he’s mature, he’s got presence, he’s rooted and is of high importance in his family, community and church.”

“When my fiancé proposed, I said to him I want to be on Our Perfect Wedding because I believe that our wedding will be a perfect wedding,” says Vuyelwa.

Bootcamp Mzansi Ep2 Review: A teary farewell

$

0

Proceedings kicked off on a high note this week in the Bootcamp Mzansi house, when actor and musician Clint Brink pulled the mother of all surprises and dropped by. Unfortunately, this was not a courtesy call.

Renowned for his rock solid physique and Muay Thai skills, the actor wasted no time putting the contestant’s through their paces. And of course, South Africa was thrilled.

As the contestants were happily coming down from the high of a great training session, Mulalo dropped a bombshell. “I want to go home. I feel like everyone in the house blames me for everything that goes wrong”. Left shell-shocked by his voluntary exit rumblings, some of the contestants quickly rallied to his side, while others expressed how indifferent they were to his possible exit. “You have taken the place of someone in the township, who would have relished the opportunity to be on the show,” MaBlerh said, during a tense bonfire therapy session banded together by psychologist, Tshepiso. Despite a one on one session with Nonhle, Mulalo couldn’t be swayed and decided to throw in the proverbial towel. Did he give up too soon?

This week, it also came to light that some of the Bootcampers have been hiding food. But for what purpose? Could this be the reason why so many of the contestants were nervous about this week’s weigh-ins? Luckily, none of the contestant packed on the pounds this week, which came as a welcome relief.

Bonginkosi, or “the skinny guy” as Tsepo and MaBlerh like to call him, continued with his sublime form and won this week’s challenge. Bo has won every challenge presented to the contestants, since he first walked into the Bootcamp mansion. After being given the choice between a spinning bike or the chance to hang out outside the house for a couple of hours, Bonginkosi chose the bike and gave Khanyo her freedom. MaBlerh impressive showing on the other hand, earned him second place.

This week, Nomalanga and Mary impressed and were the best performing of the contestants. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Mduduzi and Siphokazi, who found themselves in the bottom two. After a dramatic wait, the bad news was finally delivered and Siphokazi was given her marching orders.

Our Perfect Wedding: You never know where you’ll meet ‘the one’

$

“Love is always hiding in the most unexpected corners,” said Tumi after last week’s wedding. “Who knows? You could also go out to buy a car and come back with a brand new husband or wife.”

It turns out, Andile and Vuyelwa, aren’t the only ones who met in an unexpected way. Many celebs had no idea that they would be meeting ‘the one’ when they did.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had no idea that their time on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith would bring them closer together. “It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe,” Jolie said in an interview with Vogue Magazine in 2006.

In 2004, Kanye West was in studio with Brandy recording their hit “Talk About Our Love”. Kim Kardashian was working as an assistant to Brandy at the time. But the couple remained friends for nine years before tying the knot. In 2010 Kanye helped Kim with her music video and two years later the two were spotted sitting in the front row at the New York Fashion Week. Later that year they announced that they would be having a baby together.

Jada Pinket met her future husband, Will Smith, at a Fresh Prince of Bel Air audition when she was 19. It was only years later at dinner with mutual friends that Jada saw something in Will. “I saw that he had grown from this lanky kid to this really responsible man. We started courting each other and our friendship turned into romance,” she says.

Despite being one of the world’s most talked about couples, Beyonce and Jay Z have managed to keep a lot of details about their private life hidden. The two met in the music scene and started dating when Beyonce was 19 years old. In 2012 they recorded “Bonnie And Clyde” but they remained silent amidst rumours that they were dating. The paparazzi continued to snap shots of them together at various events while they continued to share the stage in performances of the duets they produced. In April 2008, the couple had a secret wedding in New York and in 2011 Beyonce announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Love Back: Fans can’t wait for more

The guys behind Parental Advisory Productions are at it again. Sunday saw the launch of the latest production, Love Back on Mzansi Magic.

The first episode saw Tshepo from Sebokeng determined to patch things up with his “future wife” Zanele. “I want her to see that in spite of all these challenges, I still want to be with her,” he said.

While host Thomas found it hard to believe that Zanele would break up with Tshepo because of church, viewers at home also found it hard to understand what happened to the two lovebirds.

Meanwhile, Production Manager Shirley, had convinced Zanele that she was off to a dinner date with a famous celeb. After battling with Zanele’s busy schedule, the Love Back team finally got Zanele and Tshepo together. But things looked bleak for Tshepo who had just poured his heart out to his lady. “No! Before you go anywhere, why TV?” she asked.

His pleading had no effect on Zanele who was adamant that she did not want to hear another word from Tshepo.

“I don’t know why you want to do this. It was totally unnecessary,” she said before calling for her car to be brought to her…by a male BFF. Hmm…

It was an unlucky day for Tshepo but perhaps next week’s couple will have better luck. One thing is certain, Love Back has just been added to Mzansi Magic viewers’ “must watch” list.

Tune in to a brand new episode of Love Back with Thomas Gumede every Sunday at 17:30 only on Mzansi Magic. Take part in the conversation using the official hashtag: #LBMzansi.

Bootcamp Mzansi: Gym Etiquette

If you’re serious about getting fit, then most of your free time will be spent in the gym. Goodie! However, as exciting as it might be to “take back” your body, time spent at the gym can prove flustering. Why? The guy on the treadmill loudly singing along to Lady Gaga, Jono, the bodybuilder who prances about in his man-thong and the many other gym characters who grate your skin. MuscleandFitness.com recently put together a gym bible that you can print out, hand out, or stick on your local gym locker room.

Respect the water line

There’s nothing more frustrating than standing in line behind the guy filling up his giant-size shaker cup or gallon jug of water when all you want is a quick sip between sets. If you’ve got a big bottle to fill and someone without a bottle gets in line behind you, step aside momentarily and let that guy drink first.

Don’t giant set in a crowded room

This one should be the most obvious and self-explanatory, but many guys just don’t get it. The gym is a public space, and the weights belong to everyone. If the gym is nearly empty, circuit train all you want. But if it’s packed (as it is on most weeknights after working hours), don’t hog a bunch of equipment for yourself. If you absolutely need several pairs of dumbbells for a long giant set, be prepared to let other people work in.

Clean up after yourself

You wouldn’t want to strip a few hundred pounds off the bar every time you go to the rack, so don’t leave anything on the bar when you’re done, either. Bars that don’t get stripped after sets will bend over time, and eventually be rendered useless to serious lifters. For dumbbells, many gyms label designated spots for each one, so put them back in those spots. This will also save time when you’re looking for what you need.

Do not walk around naked

There’s nothing wrong with being comfortable in your own skin. However, no one needs to see your junk and we’ll wager that everyone feels the same way. It’s not that hard to cover up with a towel on your way to the shower, so please, do everyone a favor.

Do not carry a cellphone

There’s nothing more distracting than someone yammering away on his cell phone when you’re in the middle of a set. Most people stay connected 24/7 these days, but if you expect to get results in the gym, you’re not going to get them if you’re checking your phone every 10 seconds. Whatever it is, it can wait. Leave the phone in your car or locker.

Offer a spot

We’re all pressed for time when we train, but when someone is lifting without a partner, he’ll probably need a spot at some point in his workout. And at some point, that guy will be you. Just make sure you spot properly. On the bench, this means your hands should be hovering just an inch below the bar, ready to help in case the lifter gets in trouble. Before the set, agree on a cue he can give you during the set if he needs help. Otherwise, don’t help unless he completely stalls out.

Do not interrupt a set

Lifting safely requires 100% concentration, so leave a decent-size buffer between you and anyone who’s in the middle of lifting. You should leave enough of a radius around other guys so that there’s no conceivable chance that you might be in the way if someone drops the weight. This is both a personal space and safety issue. Likewise, if you have a question like, “How many more sets do you have?” it can wait until a break between sets.

Do not sing along to your iPod

No one wants to hear you singing along to the tunes coming through your headphones. Try to hit a falsetto note like Beyonce and people will run in terror. Try to keep up with Tupac and people will think you’re a mumbling psychopath. Whatever kind of music gets you moving, please keep it to yourself.

Honour the newbies

Even if you are the new guy, we hope you won’t stay one for very long. Once you have the lay of the land, remember where you started and that everyone was a new guy once. Offering help, or just saying “Hi”, can go a long way toward creating a positive, productive environment.
