Isibaya Review: I call the shots

Iris proved herself to be quite the iron lady when she discovered the taxi drivers are cheating her of the daily takings due to her. She didn’t seem too surprised at this, and at once she called her bodyguard and hit-man Utze to teach them a lesson.

Things didn’t exactly go according to plan, and Utze got very heavy handed with the punishment he was meant to mete out. He killed one of the drivers and left a bloodied note in his seat, written 1576, the amount of money each drivers knows to bring Iris at the end of each day. Expecting a retaliation from either the dead driver, Knifeman, or from Samson, Iris decided to arm herself by getting a gun.

Zweli popped the big question to Sihle, who happily accepted. The ladies threw her an iintimate bridal shower to toast her impending wedding. Even a demoralised Lerato showed up, who had just been fired for failing to produce a vaild matric certificate. Tshepiso strung her along long enough to get what he wanted from her – a night of passion – and then let her down. Too ashamed to let her father know she’d been fired, she kept up a charade of continuing to go to work. Mehlemamba saw right through her, and assured her he wouldn’t judge her.

Samson made another attempt to mend wall between him and his son, but Sbu wouldn’t give her father the time of day.

BBMzansi: Ace and Ntombi win R2 Million!

Unrestrained joy flowed tonight (Sunday May 17) as sensational Soweto sweethearts Ace and Ntombi, whose hugely entertaining personalities have captivated fans across the country, were voted the winners of reality super-series Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble, in a live 90 minute Finale screened exclusively on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).

In what can only be described as a dream come true for the much-loved duo, they walked away with the life-changing R 2 million prize after spending 56 days in the Big Brother house where they laughed, danced and sang their way into minds and memories of viewing audiences, winning hearts as much for their close-knit relationship as for their good humour and optimistic approach to life. And they left the show in the same way they entered it – thrilled to be on stage and as in love with each other as ever!

It was always going to be a hugely emotional and highly dramatic Finale, and it certainly was just that, starting with the winner results being placed in a secure Perspex box on stage where it would be kept until it was time for the big announcement. Three pairs remained in the game at the start of the show, and for Blue and K2 as well as Chelsea and Mbali the night was bittersweet as they came so close to scooping the title. But while that wasn’t meant to be, both pairs can be confident in the knowledge that they too are stars in their own right having succeeded in making it all the way to the big Finale.

Tonight’s show boasted an all-star music line-up and the excitement in the air must have added a magic element because they delivered unforgettable performances. From superstar AKA’s sizzling rendition of All Eyes On Me, featuring Jr and Da Lez, to Busiswa’s epic Lahla, the Big Brother stage become home to a powerhouse celebration of South African talent. And not to be outdone, the last performance of the night was delivered by none other than TradeMark, featuring Durbn Nyts & Zintle, with their hit track Shumaya.

Also in studio providing their very own perspective on the events of the evening and ensuring that fan opinions were very much part of the night, were the gorgeous pair of Dineo Ranaka and Kuli Roberts, reprising their launch night roles as celebrity commentators. But despite all the star power on display, the night belonged to the six remaining Housemates and the show recapped their triumphs and challenges throughout the season.

From Ace and Ntombi who never once won the Head of House title but took top honours in the Double or Nothing Challenge Dance Off, to the girl power pact of Chelsea and Mbali who worked hard to win many challenges and stash some cash along the way; and of course including fierce competitors Blue and K2 who also won challenges galore, the Top 3 Pairs definitely earned their right to be in the Finale.

The Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble Finale also paid tribute to their fellow Housemates who began the journey with them and who departed the show at different times along the way. One of the highlights of the Finale was an insert featuring Soxx and Tembi, who evicted last week, just one week shy of the Finale. Looking happy and relaxed the pair was philosophical about their exit, chatting easily about their experiences on the game, their highs and lows plus their predictions about who would win the big prize.

The R 2 million prize was very definitely the focal point of the Finale, and before long, series presenter Lungile Radu was ready to cross to the house and evict the pair with the least viewer votes, as the countdown to the night’s big announcement heated up. After chatting to the Top 3 pairs about their past week, which included an elegant gala dinner on Friday night with six Mzansi Magic stars, and a party on Saturday night with some of last year’s Secrets Housemates, Lungile get got down to the main business. After a short tense pause, he revealed that Chelsea and Mbali had scored the least viewer votes and would have to leave the house immediately. As the pair, dressed to impress, made their way onto stage, the reality must have set in for Blue and K2; as well as Ace and Ntombi, that they were just moments away from possibly life-changing news.

And while the dream was not to be for Chelsea and Mbali, the gracious pair handled their exit with poise and charm. The duo must have been as anxious as everyone else though to hear just which pair had won but they had to wait a little while longer because Biggie has plans of his own.

Talking directly to Ace, Ntombi, Blue and K2, the big man thanked them for spending time in his house, congratulated them on their success so far and instructed them to complete one final task. After walking through all the areas of the house one last time to say their goodbyes to their home of eight weeks, and after enjoying a gorgeous fireworks display in the garden, the foursome exited the house. Then, in what was a truly powerful farewell, they switched off the lights to the house, one section at a time and for the first time since the show kicked off with a unique double launch on March 22 and March 23, Biggie’s Double Trouble crib closed its doors.

On stage, in front of a delighted studio audience that included members of their families and last year’s winner Mandla Hlatshwayo, the Top 2 Pairs spent time with Lungile viewing clips from their stay in the house, and revealing what they were thinking and feeling as they progressed in the game.

Then, with just minutes left in the Finale, Lungile walked over to the clear Perspex box that had held the winner names securely since the start of the show, and retrieved the all-important envelope which held the final results, verified by Deloitte. With a hush falling over the studio audience, Lungile opened the envelope and, announced that ACE and NTOMBI has scored the most audience votes and were the winners of Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble.  And just like that, with the audience roaring their approval and confetti filling the air, the show came to a fitting and fabulous end.

Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble was produced for Mzansi Magic by Endemol Shine Africa. Over 27 million votes were cast over the course of the season and the show enjoyed great popularity among fans.  The show attracted 1.2 million messages to TV; 340 000 Facebook likes and 159 000 Twitter followers while the show’s official website logged 20 million page impressions by 1.4 million users. Meanwhile videos from the show were viewed online more than 1.4 million times. You can still engage with the show on any of the following platforms:

We all know how awkward the meet-the-family stage of a budding relationship can be. You hope your sweetheart’s father will like you, their mother won’t start talking about the ex-flame she hoped would become her daughter-in-law, and you really, really hope his sister won’t say, “Aren’t you the girl I saw dancing on the table at a club last month?”

This Sunday on Date My Family, 22 year old Aggrecious Mahlangu puts the cart before the horse, so to speak. She’s dating the families of three guys BEFORE she meets the guys! She’ll be hosted by their families, ask them questions, and try to figure out who she could possibly cosy up to, all based on the chemistry she has with their families.

Will it be the family of Ntokozo Phiri from Thembisa who wins her over on his behalf, will the family of aspiring musician Romeo Williams sell him to Aggrecious the best, or will she be spending more Sunday afternoons with the family of Austin Sithole? Catch Date My Family this Sunday at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic to find out.

Date My Family: Mzansi’s New Reality show!

Following the success of the ultra-popular Our Perfect Wedding and the spin-off My Perfect Proposal, DStv’s Mzansi Magic is fast becoming the place to go for romance themed reality. On Sunday May 24 at 20:00, the channel is once again looking to strike ratings gold when it launches the fun and fresh reality series DATE MY FAMILY. Yes, indeed. So forget about the ‘two people meet each other’ typical love story. It’s now a full-on family affair!

How it works is simple yet oh-so-tantalizingly different.

In each 60 minute episode, audiences are introduced to a bachelor/bachelorette who’s looking for love. That singleton is then sent on three dates – to meet the families of 3 potential partners. The twist in the tale? The bachelor/bachelorette must choose just one potential partner who they think they’ll hit it off with – based solely on what the families say and do! But will they make the right choice?

The three potential partners will be kept out of sight, watching the action unfold onscreen, as the bachelor/bachelorette engages with their respective family. They will also secretly be hoping that their families paint them in the best possible light and make a good first impression. With no communication at all between the bachelor/bachelorette and the potential partners, the scene is set for an unforgettable final date. Expect laughs and drama as Cupid gets a helping hand from brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms, dads, nieces, nephews, cousins and of course, grandparents. At the end the day, the question remains: will it be love at the first ‘hello’ or will it be a fast goodbye!

Commenting on the 13-part series, M-Net South Africa CEO Yolisa Phahle says, “DATE MY FAMILY follows on the outstanding appeal of other Mzansi Magic programming in this genre. We recognize that audiences are tuning in to see original, relatable programming and this series, while definitely fresh, speaks to a context that viewers may well be familiar with – where family dynamics can influence and inform romantic relationships.”

DATE MY FAMILY is produced for Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) by Connect TV every Sunday at 20:00, starting 24 May 2015. And who knows, it may well be your family (or one a lot like yours) in the spotlight.

Isibaya Review: A gentleman’s agreement

“What a tangled web we weave when we first practice to deceive.” Lerato learnt first hand what this means when she got caught in her own lie, after spinning the web around herself over and over. Choosing to keep it from her father that she’d lost her job from her father, she continued to pretend she was going in every day, until her father called work looking for her, and the truth was revealed.

Having the opportunity to come out with the truth, she continued to entangle herself and spun a story about a retrenchment, which “noble” cause Shadrack chose to take up to ensure her daughter had proper recourse. When the truth came to light, Lerato broke her father’s heart.

Ding-Ding found himself in a precarious position when his sly behaviour was found out and he found himself booted out of the Zungu yard.

Thandeka and Sbu got a considerable wedding gift from Mpiyakhe; nothing less than the mansion Thandeka grew up in. Purposing to keep his daughter safe in a secure house, Mpiyakhe packed his things and declared his intention to return to Bhubesini indefinitely. Thandeka was overjoyed, but his pride couldn’t let Sbu feel the same way. He refused the gift, wanting to buy Thandeka a home himself, and it became a tug of war between the newlyweds.

Eventually, Sbu and Mpiyakhe met at the negotiating table, where Sbu offered to buy the house from Mpiyakhe, as opposed to getting what he thought was a handout.

Isibaya meets Ayeye!

Last night Isibaya viewers were excited to see an amazing cross-over of the show with an equally star-studded show, Ayeye.

Ayeye launched on Isibaya on Friday 22 May on Mzansi Magic, so just after our viewers were introduced to the likes of Jacaranda aka JK (Thapelo Mokoena) and Isaac (Zola) on Ayeye, the duo made an appearance on Isibaya too.

It turns out that the vintage car that Thandeka has been dying to recover and present it to her hubby, Sbu as a birthday present is now owned by JK. So in last night’s episode, the damsel had to meet with the suave JK at a restaurant to try and work out a fair deal. Mhmmm JK, 80 stina veer?

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 3.32.41 PM

Well yes, JK is adamant that R80, 000 is the price befitting the classic Benz – if he really had to let it go. Perhaps Thandeka shouldn’t have mentioned the fact that the car was actually pimped by her husband and she wanted to get it back to surprise him. “Your husband?”, a seemingly disappointed JK quipped. But hey, Ayeye fans would know that JK doesn’t really have a lady in his life so…

As if that was not enough, Thandeka saw what seemed to be her brother Jabu just as she left the restaurant and guess what? Boom into Isaac. What a nice touch! Was Thandeka seeing things or Jabu certainly is back in town – if he ever left?

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 3.33.18 PM

Will we be seeing more of the Ayeye crew on Isibaya? Interesting times lie ahead so better stay tuned to Mzansi Magic because you never know where you’ll spot your favourite actors. Kusaba mnandi la!

Catch Ayeye on Mzansi Magic every Friday at 21:00. Isibaya is on Mzansi Magic Monday to Friday at 20:30.

Date my family: A sea of regret

Date My Family premiered on Sunday, and we met reserved bachelorette Aggracious Mahlangu, a 21-year-old psychology student who had been out of the dating game for three years to focus on her studies. Deciding it was time to find her perfect match, she went on three dates with three families, with the aim to decide which of the bachelors she would most like to go on date with, solely based on the impressions of their families.

First up was the Phiri family, a small, close-knit family with a bubbly matriarch. Aggracious was rather late for her date with them because of traffic, but when she arrived, she found a spread of lamb stew and dumpling, with all the trimmings, including a potato salad made by the bachelor, Ntokozo Phiri. Aggracious was not at all impressed to hear that Ntokozo had only just completed matric, despite being the same age as her, and when the Date My Family driver opened the door, he was met by a bottle of wine and not Aggracious.

phiri

Next to dine with Aggrcious was the family of 20-year-old rapper Romeo Williams, whose two younger brothers quickly won Aggracious over with their enthusiasm for Hip-hop. She called them “too cool for your ages”, and they giggled as she dined on basted ribs made by Romeo himself. At the end of the night, she was presented with a single red rose and some chocolates. It wasn’t enough to win Aggracious over, though, and Romeo was left staring at the Date My Family car as it drove away, with a bottle of wine in his hand.

williams

Last to try to win Aggracious over for their single was the family of Austin Sithole. A big, vibrant family with lots of women, which initially intimidated Aggracious. An offer of a glass of wine put her at ease, and soon, she was laughing along with the family, over Portuguese chicken. They sold Austin to her brilliantly, and had her convinced that was the male version of herself that she’d been looking for. Her only concern was that the family made Austin out to seem shorter than her. It was not enough to be a deal-breaker, though, as she chose to go on a date with Austin, based on the impression given by his family.

When it came time to go on the one-on-one date, Aggracious bubble of excitement was burst by disappointment. Austin did not look how she thought he’d look, she found herself not attracted to him, and she even compared him to a piece of steak that should be succulent, but turns out to be bland. She pined for the attractive Romeo she rejected the entire date, while an oblivious Austin tried his best to get to know her. Her facial expressions were very telling, and she was unable to hide her disappointment. The date left her thinking, “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” Hard luck, Aggracious!

Then most flattering gown for your body shape

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and most of the time, a bride is always breathtaking just by virtue of her being the bride. However, nothing can detract from a bride’s beauty quite like an ill-fitting or unflattering gown. Baring flesh where it looks like it shouldn’t be visible or a petite bride drowning in a huge ball gown are some of the things that can be avoided by taking your body shape into consideration when choosing your gown.

Petite brides
Small framed brides; those slender and/or short should avoid huge ballgowns, as they tend to swallow them. Petite brides should avoid overwhelming their small frame; choose structured trumpet styles instead. They will show off your frame and let you, not the dress, be the star of the show.

Whether you want to create the illusion of a smaller frame or celebrate your curves, we’ve got you covered. Thicker fabrics such as taffeta are ideal for curvy brides because they smooth everything out, creating a streamlined silhouette. Strapless styles can make shoulders look wider, so consider going for a dress with thicker straps or cap sleeves. Avoid bodices that are heavily beaded or embellished. Te most important advice for finding a wedding dress is to know your body shape. Top-heavy brides with hourglass figures look great in trumpet silhouettes, whereas an A-line cut is better if you’re bottom-heavy, and apple-shaped brides look best in empire dresses or ballgowns.

Busty Bride

If you’ve got it, (tastefully) flaunt it! Brides who are gifted in the decolletage area shouldn’t try too hard to hide it, because in trying to cover it up too much, you could have the opposite effect and having every one of your guests’ eyes going…there. A sweetheart, V-neck, or scoop neck are flattering
Also, if you don’t mind showing some skin, an off-the-shoulder look may be the right wedding dress that flatters a big bust. Avoid a high neckline, it will make your bust look bigger; also avoid halter-top styles. Be tasteful when showing cleavage (heaven knows we have plenty of it). There’s a fine line between classy and trashy. Keep your neckline and bust line simple. It’s best to avoid large embellishments, heavy bead-work or other large details on the bodice. It will be the first place people look and we’re trying to downplay this area.

Last night on Our Perfect Wedding, traditional healers Bongani and Zandile took us on an eye-opening journey exploring Zulu customs, culture and tradition. After many years together, they solidified their union by becoming man and wife in the scenic hills of Eshowe, KZN.

Theirs wasn’t your usual run-on-the-mill wedding; it shone a floodlight on Zulu wedding customs. From the bride having to leave her home before sunrise, having to arrive at her marital home covered only in a blanket, to getting dressed outside in the bush, viewers got exposed to what they’re probably not used to, and the lessons and celebration of customs and tradition was appreciated.

Sanelisiwe MaSibisi Mbele: Zulu culture is well respected in this wedding. Big ups!

Vuyo Hashe: I’ve learnt lot from this wedding. I’m not Zulu but i feel like one. Big ups, guys!

Tlotlo Makgeng: Thank you OPW for this episode, I have learnt a lot indeed and all the best to the couple, May the Almighty bless them!!
