Hot Plate: All’s well that ends well

The day Mankomo had been waiting and planning furiously for had finally arrived. After asking, begging, and even haggling Jangco and the jag lady Thabisile for help, he was finally realising his dream of throwing the senior citizens a lunch, as a way to pay homage to his own grandmother who had raised him. Things, however, did not go according to plan. The day started off on a sour note when Mankomo was over and hour late to meet Jag Lady at the home to start preparations; his excuse being that the organised transport let him down. It all just went downhill from there.

Out of the frying pan into the fire. Things rook a turn for the worst when Mankomo revealed that he still hadn’t bought the supplies for the gift packs he meant to give to the senior citizens. Jag Lady couldn’t hide her annoyance, but she didn’t give up and walk out on him. Leaving knives and aprons behind, they left for the shopping trip, leaving a fuming Dinah behind worried that they elders wouldn’t eat at their usual 1 o’clock time.

But in the end, despite the event looking to be an immense failure, it all worked out. Mankomo managed to placate everybody who was angry with him, and still cooked a va-va-voom meal for the senior citizens, which they savoured. With the help of Jangco, Jag Lady and Gerliki, whose forebearance must be commended, Mankomo pulled off a successful event.

Wedding etiquette: what NOT to do

$
0
0

There are things that people know NOT to do at someone’s wedding. These are the unwritten rules that polite, sober-minded members of society adhere to when given the honour of being invited to a wedding. However, there’s always that one person who gets all tangled up in a wedding faux pas, and claims to have been none the wiser. Here are some of the most common rules of wedding etiquette that one should be careful to keep.

Don’t be late
On the day of someone’s wedding, there are only two celebrities; two stars of the show: the bride and the groom. For that one day, everybody shows them respect unequivocally, and that means arriving on time for the wedding. Only they can be late, and even that’s debatable. The bride would say only she may be late. Having the ceiling high chapel doors swing open while the ceremony is in progress, with a guest arriving with a flood of sunlight following them is not not okay.

Don’t arrive in beachwear
So maybe the heading is a bit dramatic, but it’s important to respect the dress code of a wedding. It may be that everybody knows you have a quirky dress sense and you’re a serial rule breaker, but just for one day, toe the line. Looking like you’re off to a braai after the wedding is not cool. If no dress code is given, it’s always safe to be dressed smart. No flip-flops.

Don’t get drunk
It’s not your party, and you can’t get drunk if you want to. Don’t make the couple regret blessing the guests with an open bar by getting completely wasted and punching the bride’s uncle or attempting to dip the groom’s grandmother on the dance floor. That stuff goes on video, and that means it’ll never go away. Spare yourself, and the couple, the embarrassment.

Don’t bring all your buddies along
Chances are the invitation you were given allows you to bring one person along as your date. Just one. That person will be catered for, seated and given food, at the couple’s expense, as a courtesy to you. Deciding to bring all your housemates or three of your best friends along to the wedding is just rude.

Don’t wear white
This seems like a no-brainer, but just in case you didn’t know: unless you belong to the Knowles family and you’re all wearing white and breaking the Internet with the pictures, do NOT wear white to someone else’s wedding. Who wants to be that girl? You have so many colour combinations to choose from. The colour wheel is your oyster. Let the bride shine; it’s her day.

Six people who didn’t get love back

$

0

Love makes you do crazy things. Here’s a list of people who should have listened when MeatLoaf professed “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that” and instead, took Beyonce’s ‘Crazy in Love’ to ridiculous (and decidedly felonious) levels.

Have your friend shoot you

4

Yes, this is a true story. After being dumped by the love of his life, 20-year-old Jordan Cardella convinced his best friend to take up arms and shoot him three times so his ex would feel sorry for him and take him back. After firing a single shot, the marksman came to his senses and promptly drove Cardella to the hospital. Instead of getting a visit from the love of his life while hooked up to a drip, Cardella got a visit from the cops. It turns out, planning your own shooting, even if it’s for love, is a criminal offence.

Smear faeces on your ex’s door, then set yourself on fire

5

Lovesick Rasheen Harrison chose to forgo the love letter and chocolate route and instead took the road less travelled (the smelly one at that). Harrison thought the best way to get his ex girlfriend’s attention would be to smear her door with fecal matter. After failing to move her with his bold declaration of love (surely she has a heart of stone), he set himself on fire. Now that’s class! Did he get his woman back? Of course not. But he did find himself in the back of a police van.

Cry on Youtube

3

After catching her long distance boyfriend cheating (turns out he actually lived with his long-time girlfriend), Kelly Summers created a Youtube channel and documented her grief for the world to see. We’re talking crying sessions complete with runny nose and smudged mascara, as well as reflective diary sessions. After the channel went viral, her ex waltzed back into her life, citing how seeing her raw grief on the web helped him realize she was the one. A month later however, she turned out to not be the one, because he got back together with his live-in girlfriend. Ouch.

Call your ex 77 000 times in one week

2

When Erykah Badu sang “call Tyrone”, we’re certain this is not what the star had in mind. A 28 year old woman left law enforcement officers dumbfounded by the sheer magnitude of her stalking prowess (or lack thereof). Linda Murphy, the woman scorned, called her ex boyfriend 77 639 times, sent him 1937 emails, 41 229 text messages, 217 sung messages and 647 letters, all in one week. You don’t understand. She even SANG! All this after only having dated him for three whole weeks. Now that’s real love.

Give away your kidney

1

Four months into nerd Alex’s relationship with bombshell Cathy, the love of his life ran into his arms, tears streaming down her face. Her beloved brother was on his deathbed and desperately needed a kidney transplant. What did Don Juan do? Volunteered one of his own and saved the day. A week after the operation, Cathy professed her undying love and devotion to Alex, but just two months later, quickly forgot her vows. Turns out, her brother was in actual fact, her fiancé.

Break into his home
Although these two have never dated, this story deserves to be on this list, for obvious reasons. Remember when singer Chris Brown came home from a wildly successful tour to find a strange, naked woman in his house? How could anyone forget? “Mrs Brown” had slept in his bed and had even cooked a delicious meal for the two of them. How romantic!

Wedding traditions around the world

There are many ways to say, “I do”, and around the world, it’s done differently. Here are some wedding traditions from different around the world.

Jamaica Wedding Traditions
At the wedding reception, the traditional cake is a dark fruitcake made liberally with rum. After the reception, the bride and groom send the remaining slices of the wedding cake to friends and relatives who were not able to attend.

Jewish Wedding Traditions
Jewish weddings have many traditions, including the signing of the wedding contract by the bride and groom, which is called a Ketubah. It is then framed and hung in the couple’s home. After the vows and seven blessings are read, the groom crushes a wine glass to symbolize the fragility of human happiness. A lively Israeli dance called the “Hora” is performed at the reception.

India Wedding Traditions
A part of the wedding ceremony features the bride’s mother and father washing the couple’s feet with water and milk in order to purify them for the journey of their new life together.During the ceremony the couple also holds grains of rice, oats and green leaves in their hands which signify good health, wealth and happiness.

Philippines Wedding Traditions
Culture early customs required the groom to throw a spear onto the front porch steps of his fiancé’s home as a dramatic statement that she belongs to him. In the past weddings lasted as long as 3 days with ceremonies performed each day, until the 3rd day when the couple would join hands and declare their love for one another 3 times. This was followed by the binding of their hands by a priest, who then declared them married.

Yemen Wedding Traditions

The Yemeni wedding celebration includes the entire community and features a musical celebration where guests as well as professional musicians “gladden the bride” on her wedding day. The day also includes the women in the family preparing a feast for the wedding reception with traditional sweetened fritters and donuts which symbolize a “sweet life” for the newlyweds.

Date My Family: Celebrities who’ve dated jerks

$

0

If you watched Date My Family on Sunday, you may have seen bachelor Stanley’s er… less than savoury behaviour on each of the dates. From body shaming one of the single’s female relatives to asking his chosen date if she was a virgin, Stanley’s rudeness knew no bounds. But Stanley has definitely not been the only uncouth dater history has known. Several female celebrities have dated jerks, and thankfully, dumped them.

Eveleyn Lozada and Chad Johnson

ocho
Who can forget the infamous, horrendous head-butt that Chad gave his new wife that landed her in hospital? What a way to welcome her into their new union! Evelyn saw it as foreshadowing of what was to come, and just weeks after tying the knot, filed for divorce.

Rihanna and Chris Brown
chrianna
The world will never forget how Chris Brown brutally assaulted his then lady-love Rihanna. An affidavit she filed claims Brown pushed Rihanna’s head against the window, punched her with his right hand, and then continued driving while hitting her. He also bit his ear! A few years later, to the whole world’s shock, she took him back. The relationship didn’t last, and she dumped him for good. We hope.

Karreuche Tran and Chris Brown
chran
Breezy sets off the jerk-o-metre every time! After cheating on her with Rihanna a few times, an on again, off again relationship and finally the secret of a love-child coming out, Karreuche seems to have cut all ties with Chris. But history has taught the world that a lot of the times she claims to be done with him, she always finds her way into his jerky arms. Let’s hope this time it’s for good.

Naya Rivera and Big Sean
big rivera
This one may just be a case of the after-the-fact jerk, but it doesn’t make it excusable. Big Sean and Naya, after being engaged, had a nasty split that had Big Sean hitting the studios to record a diss track for Naya. The lyrics are painful to listen to; he raps that he wakes up every day celebrating because he dodged a bullet from a crazy woman. He continues to call Naya all kind of expletives throughout the track. Naya now is happily married with a baby on the way.

Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West
kimye
But sometimes the jerk stays. Kanye is famous the world over not just for his music, but his outlandish, jerk-like talk and behaviour. When a man refuses to be photographed or even caught smiling, you know you can’t expect much chivalry and loving-kindness from him. But in Kanye’s defense, he seems to be a jerk to everybody EXCEPT his wife Kim Kardashian.

Isibaya review: Chickens come home to roost

Jabu is back, and he’s in a bad way. Shadrack accidentally let the news of his return slip to Sengwayo, who is livid. The secret of his return is out at Bhubesini, and as soon as MaNcwane found out, she made for Protea Glen immediately to see about her nephew. After an emotional reunion, MaNcwane was heartbroken to find out he was on drugs.

Isaac showed up at the Protea Glen house to offer to help Jabu purge himself of his drug addiction. Thandeka was initially reluctant, but she gave in, and Isaac began the journey of sobriety with Jabu; cold-turkey, and without the help of any rehab facility.

The Zungu wives, usually as thick as thieves, saw a rift develop between them when Siphokazi hatched a plan to catch Ntuli out selling alcohol to underage kids and record it, show it to the council, and prove herself the hero of the council. Things didn’t go as swimmingly as she’d hoped, and Thokozani got hurt when a bar fight broke out. Phumelele was beyond angry at Phumelele for putting her child in danger.

Bhekifa had one of the Iris-Samson taxis set alight from hospital, sending a message to them as to who is in power. He demanded 50 per cent of their profits or else.

MaNcwane still doesn’t trust Isaac, and wants Jabu sent to hospital to have his drug problem dealt with medically. Thandeka insisted she give Isaac a chance, but MaNcwane is letting him know is no uncertain terms that she didn’t trust him.

Genetic discovery and the search for identity are the twin themes at the heart of the brand new docu-reality series Utatakho which debuts on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) on Tuesday, July 7 at 19:30.

Utatakho is centered on bringing resolution and understanding to the difficult topic of absent fathers. Using in-depth interviews, the series will explore the motivations, doubts and hopes of the three most central persons in each episode – father, mother, child.

Whether it’s a father who refuses to acknowledge his child; a mother who wants to prove her child’s father is the man she has named; or even an adult simply wanting to know who their dad is; Utatakho will try to help. From meeting each of the people involved and hearing their story, to facilitating a DNA test, and on to delivering the final results with the help of a counselling psychologist, in each 30 minute episode the show will strive to encourage union, dialogue and a positive way forward in each case that it spotlights.

Produced for Mzansi Magic by Connect tv, the series highlights a prominent social issue that affects many across this country, and is expected to resonate with audiences who can identify with its sensitive yet familiar subject matter. It is important to note that the series was not designed to deal with the topics of maintenance and fiscal arrangements for child rearing, but more to give closure to those who simply want to know how and if they are related to each other.

Commenting on the series, kwaito legend Zola (Bonginkosi Dlamini) says, “I really wanted to be involved in this particular program because it tackles a subject that is very relevant to many South Africans, and very close to my own heart. I want people to see that they can engage, that there can be a powerful positive outcome to years of questions, that using a combination of science and respect, we can have meaningful conversations about paternity, family, future. I think audiences will be inspired and moved by the stories that are told on this show.”

Fathers’ Day is on Sunday, and across the country socks and ties will be bought for the Superman in every one of our lives. But Father’s Day is not a sentimental day for everybody. Many people are estranged from their fathers, and some don’t know the identity of their fathers at all. The contesting and denial of paternity is a phenomenon that is suffered not only by ordinary people, but people in the public eye as well.

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy sired now eight-year-old Angel Iris, whose mother is former Spice Girl Melanie “Mel-B” Brown. He denied paternity, and in December 2007 he told a Dutch TV show of Mel’s pregnancy: “I don’t know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test.” In May the following year, Melanie told a tabloid magazine that Murphy was not only refusing to take a paternity test but that he also had not contacted her since Angel had been born. Eventually the test was taken, and with complete certainty, it was proven that little Angel Iris was Eddie Murphy’s daughter.

Matthew Knowles

Matthew Knowles, father of superstar Beyonce and her sister Solange, had been married to their mother Tina for 31 years until news of an affair surfaced, with claims of a child being conceived from the affair. A paternity test proved that now four-year-old Nixon was indeed Matthew’s biological son, but is estranged with his father and has never met his famous sisters. His mother is Canadian actress Alexsandra Wright, who says is fighting day and night for the her son’s right to an identity.

Melusi Yeni

Former Generations and Muvhango actor Melusi Yeni was embroiled in a paternity battle when the mother of his child took him to maintenance court last year to compel him to pay maintenance for his child. It is reported that Yeni requested a paternity test to prove paternity before making any payments.
